Let’s discuss skin care routine today. Good things take time and need sheer consistency. Everybody loves to have glowing and healthy skin. But is everybody consistent enough to follow a skincare routine? Yeah, that’s something very tricky because building a daily skincare routine and then following it “religiously” is something pretty challenging.

However, a lot of people also don’t know or don’t have enough guidance as to how to build a daily skincare routine. Well, if you lack consistency, then that’s a separate matter. But if you are struggling to build a daily skincare routine for yourself, then this article might make things easier for you.

Before jumping directly to the “main course dish,” why don’t we talk about the skin types? It is important to understand that the cleaning process and a daily skincare routine are not the same for every skin type.  Alright, let’s get to the main point now. Here is a 9-step daily skincare routine for glowing and healthy skin.

10 Steps To Build A Daily Skincare Routine

1-     Know Your Skin Type

Knowing your skin type is the first step in building a daily skincare routine. Generally, there are 5 main types of skin:

  • Oily Skin: Greasy, shiny, and possibly big pores.
  • Dry Skin: Rough, scaly, or flaky.
  • Sensitive Skin: May burn, itch, or sting, after using any cosmetic product or makeup
  • Normal Skin: Not sensitive, clear, and balanced.
  • Combination Skin: It is a combination of oily spots (nose, forehead, and chin) and dry spots (cheeks).

2-     Wash/Clean Your Face

–          Cleaning Oily Skin

If your skin is oily, you should wash your face with an oil-free foaming cleanser. Then, use warm water to rinse your face. Using an astringent or toner afterward is a good idea, but it may be irritating for the skin. However, these products are useful in removing extra oil from your skin and keep your skin clean.

–          Cleaning Dry Skin

People with dry skin should use a cleanser having no fragrances or alcohol. These ingredients can make your skin drier. Just wash your skin gently, and then use warm water to rinse it. It is not wise to use hot water because you may end up removing the natural oils in your skin.

–          Cleaning Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, then you need a gentle cleanser for face washing and then use warm water for rinsing. Don’t dry/rub your face with a towel. Avoid those products that have fragrance, alcohol, or acid in them. In fact, look out for products containing oats, chamomile, aloe, and other similar calming ingredients.

–          Cleaning Combo/Normal Skin

A normal or combo skin neither needs anything fancy nor “everything.” That said, you just need a gentle soap or cleanser and apply it with your fingertips. Then, rinse your face with warm water and dry it gently. You can change your cleanser if your skin gets oily or dry.

3-     Use A Toner

The best time to use a toner is after washing your face and before using anything else. Just put some drops on a cotton pad or into your palm and apply them to your face gently. If you are using an exfoliating toner, then use it at night. On the contrary, if you are using a hydrating formula, you can use it twice a day. However, it is not right to use retinoids, exfoliating toners, and other exfoliators at the same time.

4-     Application Of A Serum

Serums are of different types, and they work differently. For instance,

  • Serums with Antioxidants work best when you use them in the morning because they provide protection against free radicals, which you might encounter all day long.
  • Serums with Hyaluronic Acid are best suited for nighttime. In addition, these serums prevent your skin from drying out.

Apart from that, other serums have lactic acid or alpha-hydroxy acids. But, here is something you should know.

  • Use water-based serums before applying a moisturizer.
  • Apply oil-based serums after using a moisturizer.

5-     Apply/Use An Eye Cream

You can use a specialized eye cream or your regular moisturizer for your under-eye area. However, if you want to use an eye cream, it is recommended to apply it beneath the moisturizer because the eye creams are mostly thinner as compared to the moisturizers.

Similarly, if you want to get rid of puffy eyes in the morning, then apply an eye cream with the help of a metal roller-ball applicator. Don’t use a hydrating eye cream at night because it will cause fluid retention and cause eyes puffiness in the morning.

6-     Use Spot Treatment

Acne spot treatments work better at night because our body is in self-repair mode at that time. However, ingredients like salicylic acids or benzoyl acids with retinol can be a cause of skin irritation. Your main objective should be to keep your skin hydrated and calm.

7-     Apply A Moisturizer

Moisturizers are not only hydrating agents, but they also lock in all other products you have applied to your skin. If you want to moisturize your skin in the morning, then go for a lightweight lotion (SPF 30 or more). Similarly, a thicker night cream would do nicely but if you have dry skin, then consider using cream in the morning as well as at night.

8-     Use Retinoid

Retinoids are very helpful in reducing breakouts, dark spots, and fine lines because they increase the skin-cells turnover. However, if you have sensitive skin, then retinoids can be irritating. Retinoids break down in the sun so consider them using at night. But, if you want to use them during the day, then using sunscreen is mandatory.

9-     Use A Sunscreen

Sunscreen application may be the last part of your daily skincare routine, but almost every single dermatologist shares the same opinion that sunscreen is simply the most important part of any skincare routine.

UV rays can cause not only premature skin aging but also a major cause of skin cancer. You have to use sunscreen if your moisturizer doesn’t have SPF. Similarly, if you are using a chemical sunscreen, you need to apply it at least 20 minutes before going out.

While you are buying sunscreen for yourself, look out for broad-spectrum SPF (protection against UVB and UVA radiation).

Skincare is not something you can take lightly. You have to be very consistent to get the desired results. People often think that skincare is a really hectic thing. Well, this might be true to some extent because good things need your time and effort. However, following this 9-step daily skincare routine will yield desirable results and give you healthy and glowing skin.
